Message from Pathfinder Principal, Ms. Harris

Have you heard your child mention “bug brags”? Children may earn blue bug brag tickets when adults catch them making good choices. Kids turn the tickets in to their classroom teachers and tell the class what they did to earn the ticket. Classrooms count the tickets in packets of ten and when they earn 100 bug brags, they turn the tickets in to the office for a chance to win a small prize. When we call attention to positive behavior and doing the right thing, we encourage children to make good choices that make Pathfinder a great place to learn.

Our four school expectations are: Be safe, kind, respectful, and responsible.

We focus on one positive character trait each month and children will often earn bug brags for demonstrating that behavior. This month, our character trait and behavior focus is kindness. We look forward to announcing our first winning classrooms of the year in our next newsletter.

Warm Regards,
Julie Harris

Message from Pathfinder Dean of Students, Miss Walker

It has been so rewarding watching students arrive each day for school with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. Inside classrooms, students are developing routines and becoming active, engaged participants. During mealtimes, they are becoming more independent opening food packages, including those tricky milk cartons! At recess, new friendships are forming and giggles fill our hearts watching our imaginative friends explore the playground.

Although many students have already decided that school is a wonderful place to be, others are still learning what life is like being away from home. If you are experiencing this, the best thing you can do is consistently send your child to school, even on days he/she expresses sadness or a desire to stay home. It’s hard seeing your child upset, but our Pathfinder team will be here ready to provide reassurance and support on those difficult days. Feel free to contact the school on challenging mornings so we can connect with your child and find ways to get him/her excited about school.

Young children thrive with routines. The transition back from a weekend, vacation, or returning after an illness can feel overwhelming. It’s our job to support students and help them feel safe. We look forward to partnering with you on the best of days and the more challenging moments. Establishing healthy habits, like consistent attendance, is a gift that will support a lifetime of success!

Warm Regards,
Melissa Walker

Pathfinder's Emergency Food Drive

We’re excited to announce our upcoming Food Drive, happening October 20–24! During this week, we’ll be collecting non-perishable food items to support our school’s emergency preparedness efforts.
What happens to the food?
  • All donated items will be stored and used in case of emergencies throughout the school year.
  • If the food is not needed, we’ll donate everything to a local food bank at the end of the year to help families in our community.
Your generosity makes a difference—thank you for supporting our students and neighbors!

Superhero Day is October 23 & 24

Superhero Day is here at Pathfinder!

Thursday, October 23 for preschool
Friday, October 24 for kindergarten

Your child can come dressed in their favorite superhero outfit. Please help ensure their success that day by making sure their outfit is comfortable and allows them and others to be the best learner they can. Please do not send students to school with a costume-related masks or other props as part of their outfit. Thank you!

Holidays & Celebrations

One of our goals at Pathfinder is to make learning fun and joyful. We also think it is important to teach children about American traditions, but to do so in a way that respects varied cultures, families, and religious beliefs.

Since many families do not celebrate Halloween, our focus at the end of October will be on seasonal activities and harvest celebrations. Students will not be allowed to bring/wear costumes from home. We will provide you with any community events that we learn about in our newsletters. All children may safely attend school on October 31 without being exposed to activities that may conflict with personal or religious beliefs. If you want more information about the seasonal activities that will occur in your child's classroom, please reach out to their teacher.

Ways to Support your Child at Home

A good pencil grip allows a child to keep the wrist steady and make small movements of the fingers to move the tip in different directions. This helps children create straight and curved lines.

Please help your child gain practice holding a pencil using the proper grip. If a child’s grip starts incorrectly, it is very difficult to change once habits are formed.

Encourage your child to start each letter at the top.

Here are some activities you can try at home.
Week 1
·        Post your child’s name on the refrigerator. Then, help him/her trace the letters with his/her finger every day.
·        Students should use a capital letter for the first letter in their name and lowercase letters for the remaining letters in their first name.
·        Have your child practice writing with a pencil, crayon, and marker.
·        Students can use a flashlight to trace letters on the ceiling.

Week 2
·        Draw a picture with a square, circle, triangle, and rectangle.
·        Tell a family member about a new friend you met at school.

Week 3
·        Tell a family member about the hallway rules.
·        Count and write numbers 1-10.

Week 4
·        Find the letters A-M in a book or in your home.
·        Draw a picture of something you did at school.
