Movie night - Unspoken
Historical black and white photo of native american children wearing suits at a boarding school
On Oct. 25, 2024, President Joe Biden formally apologized for the 150 years of Indian boarding schools. For many, the history and legacy of these boarding schools is little understood. For too many years, these important stories were not taught in our schools. Thanks to the advocacy of the 29 federally recognized Indigenous Nations in Washington state and the dedication of educators, these histories are increasingly covered in our schools.

As part of the Mukilteo School District’s Native American Heritage Month events and in partnership with the Indigenous Families Committee, we are inviting students, staff, families, and community members to a night of learning and to deepen our understanding of Indian Boarding Schools.

The event is free and will be held Nov. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Teaching and Learning Center, room 134 (9600 Sharon Dr, behind Explorer Middle School). The evening will include a screening of the documentary Unspoken: America’s Native American Boarding Schools, followed by a discussion with local educators and members of the Mukilteo School District’s Indigenous Family Committee. No sign up needed.

Bond Advisory Committee invitation
The Bond Advisory Committee reviews school needs, facility conditions and discusses priorities before proposing bond options for the school board to consider for the ballot measure. It is time to begin another Bond Advisory Committee to prepare for a future capital bond, most likely in 2026.

We would like to include representation from across the district including parents, staff, high school students and community members. Meetings will begin in January of 2025 and will generally meet the first and third Tuesday of the month in the evening. Specific meetings dates and times are noted on the interest form.

If you are interested in serving on the Bond Advisory Committee, please follow this link to complete the ParentSquare form by Nov. 29. Selected members will be notified by mid-December.

If you know of any community members who may be interested in this committee and don’t have access to ParentSquare, they can complete this online Google form.

Preparing for weather-related delays and closures
Snowy scene with school bus and the text, Prepare for weather impacts
Sometimes weather this time of year can cause school to be delayed or cancelled. Bus routes can also be affected by unsafe travel conditions. The announcement of a school closure or delay is usually made early in the morning. All authorized parents and guardians will receive a ParentSquare message if school is closed or delayed. If you have a mobile phone number on file with your child's school, you should also receive a text message.

Updated school closure and delay information will also be posted on the school district’s website, on the FlashAlert website, and the district Facebook page and Instagram page. The district will let families know if bus routes are limited, but please review your child’s alternate route before then so you can plan accordingly. The alternate bus routes are listed on the transportation website

If school is canceled, the school day will be made up later in the year.

Holiday help for families
Gifts with text, Holiday support for families
If your family could use some help with holiday gifts this year and qualify for assistance, there are many community resources that support such needs. One organization, Christmas House, provides gift shopping for qualifying families.

To learn more, please visit the Christmas House website. They provide information in English, Spanish, Ukrainian and Russian. A qualification letter can be requested from your student's school family engagement liaison or the nutrition services department if you need one.

Scheduled Skyward outage Nov. 16
The student information system, Skyward, will be offline Saturday, Nov. 16, at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for maintenance. Skyward and Family Access will not be available during that time. Thanks for your patience and understanding while the vendor works on the system.
